Finding the Winter whiting.

Making the most of the prevailing weather conditions I decided it was time to take out my yak for a day off the metro coast in variable winds below 5 knots. The plan was to fish for winter whiting, and considering the tide forecast I was confident of picking a few up on the tide turn.

However this was not to be, over the course of three hours I fished multiple holes to no avail, yielding only 3 wrasse and one dog shark. It was now the middle of the flood tide and I decided to bite the bullet and head to my number one Snook spot as a change in tactic’s was in order.

After readying my Snook outfit I thought I would use my whiting outfit for one last drop, as you never know what is lurking below. As soon as my whiting line hit the bottom I was on to a good fish. After a short fight I was able to land a KGW of 39 cms. I quickly re-baited and dropped my line, for the same result except this time I was on to a double header of 37 and 35cm fish. This action continued until I had my bag of 10, where I ceased fishing for whiting and started to specifically target Snook. However this plan failed miserable, as my Snook bait was swallowed by a plump KGW, which was landed and released quickly.

Realising that I was not to escape the KGW at this spot I packed up and headed for shore, not a bad metro day out at all.
